You decide to buy it, but then you see its price. Better another day! and, then, you may have asked yourself: How do you calculate the price of a children&#8217;s book?<\/p>\n<p>The price is, without a doubt, one of the most important points to take into account when <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babidibulibros.com\/en\/how-to-publish-a-childrens-book\/\">publishing a children&#8217;s<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babidibulibros.com\/en\/how-to-publish-a-teenagers-book\/\">young adult&#8217;s<\/a>story,<\/strong> and, many times, when assigning it to the authors, they ask,  <span to calculate the price of a children&#8217;s book, we must always look at <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">the costs <\/span>and, of course, at its <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">viability<\/span>. There is little point in taking on an ambitious and incredible project if we are not going to be able to sell it at a reasonable price. <\/p>\n<p>The retail price (RRP) of a children&#8217;s book is established by adding up all the costs involved in its creation, production and distribution, in order to ensure both its <b>quality<\/b> and <b>commercial viability<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing we have to consider when asking ourselves how to calculate the price of a children&#8217;s book is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babidibulibros.com\/en\/blog\/how-the-royalty-percentage-of-a-childrens-book-is-calculated\/\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">royalties<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">which<\/span> is usually <strong><span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">10% of the RRP<\/span><\/strong> of the children&#8217;s book. To this we must add the production costs, which in turn are divided into:   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Fixed costs<\/b>: proofreading, illustration, layout, legal management, prepress samples, etc.<\/li>\n<li><b>Variable costs<\/b>: associated with printing and dependent on the print run, size of the book, type of paper, number of pages, type of binding and number of color pages. These costs usually account for approximately <b>25% of the RRP<\/b>. <\/li>\n<li><b>Editorial maintenance costs<\/b>: include salaries, rents, licenses, equipment and other fixed costs necessary for the operation of the publishing house.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Once all these costs have been added up, the total is divided by the number of copies planned to obtain the cost per unit.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"> <\/div>\n<div>From this unit cost, a multiplier coefficient (usually between 5 and 6) is applied to determine the final selling price.<\/div>\n<div><i>Example<\/i>: if the production cost of one copy is \u20ac2.51, the RRP on the market would be approximately \u20ac15.95.<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div>When the book is marketed, the bookseller and the distributor, respectively, will retain the percentage that has been negotiated on the retail price, as part of their participation in the value chain.<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div>Although it may seem that the publisher makes a high profit, the real net margin is usually between 5% and 10%, which is used to sustain new investments, maintain the commercial stability of the catalog and amortize the copies produced that are not sold and are returned.<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_the_revenue_per_book_distributed\"><\/span>How is the revenue per book distributed?  <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The traditional publishing industry is based on a value chain model in which the revenue from the sale of a book is shared among different main agents: author, publisher, distributor and bookseller.<\/div>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"> <\/div>\n<div>In general, the distribution of the price of a sold copy is usually organized as follows:<\/div>\n<div> <\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Bookseller<\/b>: retains between 25% and 30% of the retail price.<\/li>\n<li><b>Distributor<\/b>: usually keeps a margin of 50% to 60% of the retail price.<\/li>\n<li><b>Author<\/b>: receives 5% to 10% of the P.V.P.<\/li>\n<li><b>Editorial<\/b>: assumes the costs of production, design, printing, promotion, distribution and inventory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div> <\/div>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"x-el x-el-h4 c2-4n c2-4o c2-b c2-c c2-3n c2-4p c2-3p c2-42 c2-l c2-2p c2-2o c2-2q c2-3 c2-4q c2-4r x-d-ux\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_a_small_publisher_the_same_as_a_large_one\"><\/span><span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">Is a small publisher the same as a large one?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Independent_publishers\"><\/span><strong>Independent publishers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>At this point we have to clarify the <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">differences between an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babidibulibros.com\/blog\/mejores-editoriales-independientes\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">independent publishing house<\/a><\/strong> and a large publishing group<\/span>. A small publishing house must first of all be clear about its handicap: money. <\/p>\n<p>We are companies that play with their small budgets to accommodate as many deserving authors as possible, and that is why the investment for printers cannot be as much as we would like. The <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">first print run<\/span> for this type of company is usually between <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">300 &#8211; 500 copies<\/span>, depending on the needs and interest of the distributor. If you have come across a case in which an independent publishing house has offered you a first print run of 1,000 &#8211; 2,000 children&#8217;s books, I am sorry to tell you that this has not been the case. Be wary of it.   <\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_large_publishing_groups\"><\/span><strong>The large publishing groups<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">large publishing groups<\/span> have print runs of more than <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">15,000 copies<\/span>, so the production price is very low and we can see in the market how children&#8217;s books of considerable length have an economical RRP. Depending on the publisher you go to, you should know how to calculate the price of a children&#8217;s book. <\/p>\n<p>But if we go to a small company, as mentioned above, the print run will be smaller, so the production price will go up and we will have no other choice but to set a higher PVP.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_does_it_cost_to_publish_a_childrens_book\"><\/span>How much does it cost to publish a children&#8217;s book?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>This <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">production cost<\/span> varies according to the <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">print<\/span> run<\/strong>, and depending on the type of paper, the size, the binding, if it includes some color pages&#8230; In the end, <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">the printer will keep<\/span> approximately <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">20-25%<\/span> of the children&#8217;s book&#8217;s retail price. <\/p>\n<p>Once we take all these costs into account, we will obtain a figure that is divided by the number of copies that the publisher has proposed to produce and we will get the <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">cost per copy<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The next step is to add up the payments to the distributor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udllibros.com\/html\/busqueda\/lista.php?fr_orden=fecha_novedad&amp;fr_tipoOrden=desc&amp;fr_titulo=&amp;fr_autor=&amp;fr_editorial=babidi&amp;fr_coleccion=&amp;fr_codCole=&amp;fr_materia=&amp;fr_codMat=&amp;fr_ilustrador=&amp;fr_traductor=\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">distributor<\/span><\/a><\/strong>which usually earns between <span class=\"x-el x-el-span c2-1 c2-2 c2-41 c2-3 c2-42 x-d-ux\">55-60% of each copy<\/span>, and the resulting figure is multiplied by a coefficient of 5 or 6 to obtain the final price of the children&#8217;s book on the market.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if we have a children&#8217;s book that costs us \u20ac2.51 to produce, we multiply it by 6 and the result is \u20ac15.06.
